A monthly prepaid cell phone plan is similar to a monthly contracted plan, but with no, or very limited contract. There are no credit checks, and no obligation, but there is a monthly fee. If you fail to pay the monthly fee you might lose your cell phone number, but other than that there are no consequences. There are no overages since your service will end when you’ve reached your limit, but in some cases you may be able to add additional air time until the next billing cycle.
You do have to buy your phone in advance since there is no contract, but sometimes you can get phones for less than $20. If you want a nice phone for a cheap price you can get a refurbished phone from some prepaid carriers.
There are many prepaid plans to choose from. They range anywhere from a basic calling plan with a set amount of minutes each month, to completely unlimited text, talk, and data, and just about everything in between.
Many prepaid providers offer unlimited nights and weekends, plus unlimited in network, or customer to customer calling just as with a regular contracted plan. Please don’t confuse this with a pay as you go plan. To learn more about the differences see Prepaid Cell Phone Plans vs Pay as You Go.
